Environmental Efforts

Firebug is working hard to minimise it’s environmental impact. Here are some of the things we’re doing:

Awards

Firebug has won the Greening the Laughs Award at Leicester Comedy Festival for the last two years running. The award celebrates the steps venues take to improve sustainability, for example, banning plastic straws and increasing local, organic and plant-based menu choices.

Recycling

While we aim to produce as little waste as possible, some is still inevitable. Firebug recycles as much of that waste as humanly possible. For 19 years we have been separating plastics, paper, glass, food waste and other recyclable materials before sending it to Biffa state of the art recycling facility.

Responsible Suppliers

We care that our suppliers are doing their part to reduce their environmental impacts too. Our brewery is Marston’s who have already achieved a goal of ‘Zero waste to landfill’ for their brewery. They are also working to reduce their energy and water consumption across their business, and are industry leaders with their initiatives.

We use Zenith Hygiene’s Bio Range for natural, sustainable cleaning solutions, replacing non sustainable and environmentally friendly products wherever possible – including biodegradable containers, recycled napkins and blue roll and sustainable ingredients. Or cleaning products come as concentrate, which we dilute into re-usable containers.

All out teas are fair trade and our coffee from local St Martins is Rainforest Alliance Certified

We buy local free range eggs, locally farmed meat and cheese from traders on the market just around the corner! Any local ingredients are marked on our food menu along with our extensive choice of vegan and vegetarian options.

Plastics

We are minimising our use of common single use plastics such as straws – we now use compostable straws made from corn starch.

Biffa compost these along with our food waste to produce electricity for homes in Blaby!

Water

We have flow restricting flush toilets and taps in the public areas which turn off automatically to reduce our water use. We are part of the national Refill Scheme which allows members of the public to come into Firebug anytime and refill a reusable bottle with tap water free of charge.

Cooking Oil

Olleco supply Firebug with palm oil, which is produced in Europe and is completely sustainable.
Many people think by just switching to an oil alternative they are doing their bit for the environment, but without checking the sustainability of that alternative the environmental impact could be even worse!
Our used cooking oil is always collected and treated to be used for Biodiesel.

Energy

We decommissioned our large, old, inefficient gas boiler in 2016. We now use very efficient hot air space heating and an electric water immersion heater.

Most of our public lighting is LED or low energy.

Webhosting

Firebug’s website and emails are hosted with 1&1 Ionos. All of their data centres and offices in the UK and Germany run on electricity from 100% renewable sources. They also use energy efficient hardware and software and intelligent cooling to reduce their energy use. When servers reach the end of their lifespan they are recycled or disposed of responsibly.
