Firebug is both honoured and flattered to have have been awarded the ‘Greening up Your Patch’ silver award for reducing our environmental impact during this years Leicester Comedy Festival. This is something we feel incredibly strongly about and we fully intend to continue doing our best for the environment in the future! We were awarded the accolade for the following reasons:
We’ve been separating all our recyclable waste for collection for nearly 14 years, and it’s something our staff care a great deal about.
We don’t give straws out automatically, but we do have compostable straws available on request which are made from 100% renewable recourses. Plastic building up in the oceans is a huge and growing problem, and this was something we thought was important to implement. We have also taken the step of not using any disposable products in house, and we are very happy to allow customer to refill their own drinking water bottles, further reducing plastic waste.
We allow our customers to re-use their glasses if they wish, and our public sinks have push water taps to reduce water wastage.
We have a vast array of vegan and vegetarian food and drink options on our regular menu, available all the time.
Firebug doesn’t hand out any paper or card flyers, instead using placards, which you may have seen our staff carrying about around freshers week and other key events.
The vast majority of our light bulbs are LED and on motion sensors in low use areas, and electric hot air heaters and hot water system have replaced our very old very big gas boiler, all reducing energy consumption significantly
But we’re not resting on our laurels! We’re continuing to take steps to improve our carbon foot print and environmental impact in the future:
We are switching to a new consumables supplier who are based in the UK and use driver management systems to reduce their carbon footprint. They use recyclable polythene bottles and recyclable fibreboard cartons as well as 100% recycled cardboard. We’re also using a Bio Cleaning Range of plant-based, biodegradable cleaning products.
We’re also introducing a new food menu which will highlight locally sourced produce, which is going live from this Monday, and food waste composting collections are being implemented in summer 2018.
We believe our industry should be doing much more to help the environment and would love to see things like this adopted across the board.
